A coleção é composta por 917 cepas de Yersinia pestis isoladas de casos humanos, de roedores e pulgas em diversos focos do Nordeste do Brasil na vigência de epidemias ou em períodos endêmicos durante as ações de vigilância da peste desde 1966. Além da importância histórica esta coleção é representativa da biodiversidade e do patrimônio genético e é utilizada em pesquisas e serviços. Cada cepa tem em média 3 tubos (subculturas). Não podemos estimar quantas estão viáveis. As culturas estão mantidas em tubos de gelose camada alta em geladeira no laboratório NB3 do CPqAM.
